Barbados
The island of Barbados epitomises what most visitors expect to see in a Caribbean nation. The capital, Bridgetown, is on a busy deep-water port which is popular with many cruise ships. At the Creenage on the city's old harbour are old-style warehouses converted to boutiques and bars, while Bridgetown also offers some of the best duty free shopping in the Caribbean.
Barbados beckons with a scintillating difference - two distinct coastlines - a dramatically rugged eastern coast whose ramparts brace against thunderous Atlantic breakers and which is a mecca for windsurfers worldwide, and the calm gentle coastal waters with their white and pink sand beaches on the western side. In between are the historic sugar plantations with their stunning Great Houses (a few of which have been turned into superb hotels), carefully preserved colourful cottages and flower gardens.
When the sun goes down, one of your fondest memories of Barbados may well be that of sipping a cool drink at your favourite watering hole, so be sure to try some of the local concoctions such as Calico Jack, Island Lover and Rumrunner.
